VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN SINDH

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN SINDH PROVINCE

Despite passage of different pro-women laws and laws on prevention of violence against women, reports both published and unpublished, court cases and incidents through other sources shows that violence against women still occurs. It is a major public, social and legal issue which requires considerable attention. It entails physical, psychological, social and emotional consequences. Despite UN presence in the country, province and its work on prevention of gender based violence, state’s commitment to eradication of violence against women, civil society’s action, and obligations of Pakistan to United Nation where it has ratified most of the international  human rights instruments. Pakistan has enacted laws like Early Child Marriage Restraint Act, Anti Sexual Harassment law (Protection Against Harassment of Women at Workplace Act 2010), Amendment in Criminal Procedure Code (and PPC) 2010; THE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE (PREVENTION AND PROTECTION) ACT, 2013; AntiWomen Practices (Criminal Law Amendment) Act, 2008;The Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act 2013 and other laws protect women does not show any improvement in women security and decrease of violence against women. Despite decision by the Sindh High Court that if killing of women in the name of Honor occurred in any part of the province, responsibility will be on the police officials of that area, still incidents are occurring and being reported.

Pakistan is party to ICCPR, CEDAW, CRC, ICESCR, and has been on seat of UN Security Council for many times but still these rights and protections have not been realized.

RightsNow Pakistan has started a small initiative of reporting incidents of domestic violence, sharing it with human rights activists and women rights defenders work on women protection against violence and take collective action.

Excellent work done “RightsNow”, it is very important to bring such issues to the eyes of wider population and point towards the gaps and loose holes that exist in our society. Is there any way to make a database of such incidents? with dates and place and other information?
