Critical Skills for Peacemakers: Training towards the intersection of international conflict management and social entrepreneurship

The world is at a critical juncture, and frankly, the way in which young persons are educated to address the complex and interconnected global ills plaguing communities around the world has not evolved to meet the need.

Education in crucial conflict prevention and resolution theory and practical social entrepreneurial skills largely takes place in two distinct bubbles with little crossover; in a handful of universities and in small-scale projects in conflict and post-conflict countries.  Due to a lack of time and resources, critical tools that should be learned and utilized in conjunction are taught in separate classes/trainings or not at all.  University classes are heavy on theory, although most lack a mechanism for training students in practical skills.  The inverse is true for trainees in conflict and post-conflict countries.  Furthermore, university students and trainees in the field are rarely, if ever, offered the opportunity to collaborate in such a way as to spark crucial peer learning.  Finally, the vast majority of future Peace & Security leaders lack the support and input from a global network of peers and experts which can provide them with new tools and resources, as well as guide them in their work (although the Peace & Collaborative Development Network is making inroads here).  Future leaders are not bound by a lack of energy or fresh ideas; they are instead constrained by a lack of opportunity and support to achieve their ambitious goals! Ashoka and the International Peace & Security Institute (IPSI) are both at the forefront in the battle to break through these barriers by locating, training, and empowering leaders across the globe.
